Abuja: A Catholic cleric who was abducted and taken prisoner by an armed group in the African country of Nigeria last Friday has been released. Fr. Nicholas Obo, a clergyman, was released yesterday, according to diocese officials. The diocese leadership said in a statement that they would especially like to thank those who prayed for the clergy’s release. Meanwhile, on February 13, many children were abducted from Nigeria. No information about them is yet available.
Nigeria has one of the highest rates of violence against Christians. Although President Muhammadu Buhari has repeatedly condemned the Christian genocide, nothing has been done so far for the protection and survival of the believers. International criticism against this is fierce. When Donald Trump met with the Nigerian president in 2018, Christian homicide was strongly condemned. According to a report by Christian charity Open Doors, Nigeria ranks 12th among countries with the highest rate of Christian persecution globally.
