Father Peter Gonsalves from the Mumbai Salesian Province is among the newly appointed 13 Consulters to the Vatican Communication Secretariat by Pope Francis. The Consulters were appointed on April 12th. He currently holds titles such as Master in Philosophy and Bachelor of Arts from University of Pune and Bachelor of Theology from Kristu Jyoti College, Bangalore. He has also received his doctorate in Social Communications at the Salesian Ponitifical University in 2007.
Fr. Gonsalves has spearhead the use of media education in India since 1984. He founded Tej-Prasarini in Pune, 1992, whose base was later shifted to Matunga, Mumbai. Tej-Prasarini was formed to raise awareness about the urgency of life-based education in the vernacular language of Marathi in Maharashtra through media. He was the National Coordinator for Social Communications from 1993 to 1999. Fr. Gonsalves is currently the Dean of the Faculty of Social Communications Sciences (FSC) at the Univeraita Pontificia Salesiana (UPS), Rome. He is the author of three books based on Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. He is a Communication research analyst of Mahatma Gandhi’s non-verbal communication. Father promoted a series of teacher-training manuals on ‘Quality Life Education’ in 1994 and has conducted 40 all-India media courses for school teachers, social workers and Youth facilitators from diverse backgrounds.
