His Excellency Archbishop Emeritus S. Michael Augustine of Pondicherry-Cuddalore diocese of India passed away on November 4, 2017, at the age of 85. The funeral took place at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Pondicherry on November 6, 2017, at 10:00 am. His mortal remains were kept at Escande Hall, Petit Seminaire Higher Secondary School in Pondicherry, before the funeral. He served for 39 years as a Bishop and 56 years as a priest.
His Grace Archbishop Emeritus S. Michael Augustine was ordained a priest on 15th April, 1961 by Msgr. Ambrose, the then Archbishop of Pondicherry and Cuddalore. His Holiness Pope John Paul II appointed the Metropolitan Archbishop of Pondicherry and Cuddalore on 25th June, 1992.
He received the pallium from his predecessor Archbishop Emeritus Venmani S. Selvanather in 1992 at the Cathedral of Pondicherry Archdiocese and he resigned as the Archbishop of Pondicherry- Cuddalore on 10th June 2004 upon reaching the age of superannuation.
