Vatican City: Pope Francis has appointed Archbishop Gabriel Cassia as Vatican Ambassador to the United Nations. The appointment of Gabriel Cassia came as a successor of Archbishop Bernardito Osa. The Vatican has delegated duties to Tanzania, Lebanon, and the Philippines and to the Vatican Secretariat. He has been serving as the Vatican Ambassador to the Philippines since 2017.

Gabriel Cassia responded by saying that he expects the Pope to fulfill his mission by bringing the light of the Catholic Church to international forums. Cassia was educated at the Gregorian University in the Vatican. In 2009 Pope Benedict XVI appointed him bishop. He will take up the position of United Nations Observer on January 16, 2020. Meanwhile, Archbishop Bernardito, who is currently serving as a United Nations observer, will serve as the Vatican ambassador to Spain.
