Most Rev. Abraham Viruthakulangara, Archbishop of Nagpur passed away on 19 April 2018 in the very early hours of the morning. He was 75.He died in his sleep at the headquarters of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India in New Delhi.
His Excellency Archbishop Abraham Viruthakulangara was born on June 05, 1943 in Kerala. He did his early schooling in his native place, he left for Indore in north India in 1960 to become a Priest. He did his early college studies in Indore and further Major studies in St. Charles’ Seminary Nagpur. He has his Bacaulariate in Theology (B.Th.). He did his B.A from Sagar University M P with Hindi as the main subject. After all his Philosophy, Theology and secular studies, Seminary training, Regency experience he was ordained a Catholic Priest on 28 October, 1969 and began serving as parish Priest and District Superior of Sendhwa Parish of Khargon, Madhya Pradesh.
At the very early age of 34, he was consecrated as Bishop on 13 July 1977 and was given the charge of the then newly created diocese of Khandwa. After 21 years as Bishop of Khandwa on 22 April 1998, he took charge as Metropolitan Archbishop of Nagpur. He was serving Archbishop of Nagpur. His Grace Archbishop Abraham was a noble soul, who worked hard as a spiritual leader and a guide for the Christian community in central India for decades.
