Kochi: KCBC said that while the lockdown imposed in the backdrop of Covid 19 has had a profound impact on the life of the community, it has emerged as a great demerit for the liquor industry. It has contributed well to restoring human life, health, family peace, and financial security. With the exception of a handful of suicides in the early days of Lockdown, the timely intervention of the government and community NGOs has made it possible to effectively combat alcoholism through treatment and counseling.
Suicide rates were not as high as authorities feared. Crimes caused by alcohol have been greatly reduced. Accidents, family feuds, murders, and various ailments have all contributed to the cure. The argument that the sale of liquor is necessary for the survival of the government has been proved wrong. Instead, there was the realization that alcoholism was inevitable for society.
The government is expected to announce further concessions on lockdown by May 3. KCBC Temperance Commission Chairman Bishop Yuhanon Mar Theodosius and KCBC Deputy Secretary Rev. Fr. Dr. Varghese Vallikkat said in a statement. The KCBC has issued seven proposals for urgent consideration of the state government.
