Many of us are aware of the enormous and detrimental effect that plastic has on our environment. The wastage and disposal of plastic are a major concern not only in our country but is a major global crisis. On average, our country purchases and consumes over 50 billion plastic bottles per year. If that statistic isn’t bad enough, only 40% of those 50 billion plastic bottles are recycled or put to better use. This means that 3 out of 5 plastic bottles purchased in India are thrown away. (Source – Sustainable Business Forum). This is unfavourably threatening our ecosystem because of the non-degradable nature of plastic.
Although these statistics may be displeasing, there are many simple ways to do your part in reducing plastic bottle waste, thus reducing the damage inflicted on our ecosystem. Let us look at what we can do this Lenten season to counter this problem.
- Discontinue purchasing water bottles from shops. Instead, invest in some good quality bottles and travel with a sustainable alternative.
- If you have purchased a plastic bottled beverage, reuse it. Those bottles can be made into creative best out of waste articles as well.
- This Lent let us make a promise to completely ban plastic bottles in our houses and workplaces. Spread the word among your colleagues and peers as well.
- Restrict use of plastic bottles only for travelling (good quality plastic). At homes, it would be advisable to use glass jars and bottles/mud matkas to store water.
- This Lent, let us refrain from buying any kinds of aerated drinks from the market. This will definitely keep our health in check, as well as reduce the number of plastic bottles that we consume.
The bottom line is that plastic is made from toxic materials. It’s a known fact that these toxins can leach into whatever they come into contact with. And it’s a known fact that when the compounds that make up plastic are ingested, they damage your body on a cellular level and cause health problems. So, this Lenten season, let us step closer to a healthier and sustainable lifestyle.
