His Holiness Pope Francis on January 6 accepted the resignation of His Grace Bishop Aleixo Das Neves Dias of Port Blair, which covers the entire Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Catholic Bishops Conference of India expressed gratitude to His Excellency Bishop Aleixo Das Neves Dias, SFX for his dedicated services to the Church in Port Blair and the Church in India.
His Holiness Pope John Paul II raised the Andaman and Nicobar Islands as a diocese on August 18, 1984. Bishop Dias was ordained as its first prelate on January 20, 1985.
The announcement took place in Rome on Sunday, 6th January 2019, at noon, corresponding to 4:30 p.m. Indian time.
