Bishop Giorgio Marengo is one amongst the 21 new cardinals named by Pope Francis on Sunday, May 29. He will receive the red hat at the Consistory on Saturday, August 27. He will be the youngest member of the College of Cardinals.
Belonging from Italy, he has served as a Consolata missionary priest in Mongolia for nearly 20 years. “For me, living this new vocation will mean continuing on the path of littleness, humility and dialogue,” said the bishop. In 2020, he was named as the Apostolic Prefecture in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
The Mongolian Christian population accounts 1300 and the Prefecture Apostolic of Ulaanbaatar serves the entire country. The people in Mongolia believe the newly appointed cardinal will help in improving the relations between the church and the government.
