Due to the increasing rates of divorces in Malawi, Africa, the Catholic Bishops in the country organized and conducted a marriage conference with the theme “Love is Our Mission”, which addressed common challenges in married life with a spiritual emphasis. The conference mainly focused on explaining some of the major causes of increasing divorces and also provided the faithful gathered for the conference with some divine solutions to make up a good family.
As reported by Catholic News Agency, His Excellency Bishop Peter Musikuwa of Chikwawa remarked that “The family is under attack by many influences which the church must take seriously and address them and these days, there is an increase in the number of divorce cases because our youth are getting married before they are fully prepared.” Further, His Grace added, “What happens at the end is that they think divorce is the solution when they encounter challenges.”
These months averaged 72 divorces per month in Malawi compared to just under 40 monthly divorce petitions in early 2014. It was found that 722 divorce petitions were filed at the Senior Resident Magistrate and the Chief Resident Magistrate in the capital of Lilongwe from October 2015.
