The Bishops in Mexico appealed for solidarity with all those affected by the massive, 7.1 magnitude earthquake that hit the nation on 19th September, 2017. The Mexican Bishops in a message signed by His Excellency Archbishop Jose Francisco Robles Ortega, president of the Mexican Bishop’s Conference and by the Secretary-General, His Grace Bishop Alfonso G. Miranda Guardiola, conveyed their grief for the victims of the earthquake and highlighted that they are witnessing the solidarity of the people of Mexico, who see their brother in the one who suffers.
As reported by en.radiovaticana.va, the message read that “Thousands of hands have formed chains of life, to rescue, feed or add whatever they can in the face of the emergency and today more than ever, we invite God’s people to unite in solidarity with our brothers who are suffering the different calamities that have plagued our country.” Further, it stated that “The General Secretariat of the Mexican Episcopal Conference is coordinating with different Church organizations in an effort to collaborate and it is very attentive to the information that is emerging from the different areas that are affected.”
The magnitude 7.1 quake is considered and noted as the deadliest to hit the nation since 1985, causing violent, prolonged shaking, which flattened buildings and sent masonry tumbling onto streets, crushing cars and people in the capital city, leaving more than 200 people dead.
