The  popular  blue  bordered  sari  of  St. Mother  Teresa  is  now  declared  as  an  intellectual  property  by  the  Trade  Marks  Registry  of  Government  of  India.  The  uniform  of   blue-bordered  Sari  adopted  by  the  sisters  in  the  Missionaries  of  Charity,  a  Roman  Catholic  religious  Congregation,  established  by  St.Mother  Teresa,  is  considered  as  a  unique  style  with  convincing  color  combination  and  is  the  first  uniform  that  is  declared  under  the  intellectual  property  rights.

As  reported  by  ucanindia.in,  Biswajit  Sarkar,  the  attorney  of  Intellectual  Property,  observed  that  “The  Missionaries  of  Charity  does  not  believe  in  publicity  and  such  it  was  not  publicized,  but  since  we  are  witnessing  unscrupulous  and  unfair  usage  of  the  design  across  the  globe,  we  are  now  trying  to  spread  awareness  among  people  about  the  trademark. ”  Further,  he  added, “The  blue  border  pattern  is  a  distinctive  symbolic  identity  of  Missionaries  of  Charity  under  the  concept  of  color  trademark  protection.”

Estimated  counts  of  4000  saris  are  made  in  an  year  and  are  distributed  among  the  Missionaries  of  Charity  sisters  all  over  the  world.
