Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church, Cardinal George Alencherry, President of KCBC said about the first Metropolitan of the Diocese of Idukki that he dedicated his life to the spiritual and material growth and development of the people of the area for 15 years. He sought to solve the problems of people’s lives by staying spiritual. To that end, he worked on the systems of the church and government.
The people of Idukki are farmers. They have unique problems compared to other parts of Kerala. Land problems, the cost of crops, and remedies for natural disasters are all the problems of the people. He spearheaded struggles and mass movements to solve these problems and to recognize the rights of the people there. His popular struggle against anti-peasant positions in the Gadgil-Kasturirangan report is part of history.
He always aimed to ensure the stability and livability of the farming families. The protection of life, the sense of responsibility that parents must have in giving birth to their children, the stance against alcoholic beverages that destroy family peace, and the need for organized action are all significant aspects of the bishop’s work.
His style of speech was expressive of his thoughts and feelings. He disliked the diplomacy of hiding the truth. He endeavored to lead the people to goodness by openly affirming things of integrity. Likewise, the bishop did not hesitate to question the unfavorable attitudes of the general public, leaders, and institutions.
In addition to the responsibilities of the Diocese of Idukki, he has also served as chairman of the Commission for the Family and the Life of the Xi, a member of the Commission on Backwardness and a member of the Aluva Pontifical Seminary of the Syro-Malabar Bishop’s Synod. Mar Alenchery said that although the bishop has said goodbye to the world, he would live in the hearts of all people.
