Jakarta: The work of the Jakarta Archdiocese with essential assistance in the event of a flood that has calmed the Indonesian capital. The ecclesiastical leadership has come out with support for the isolated people with essential supplies and financial aid. The office bearers said that the Dharma Dharma Institute has set up boats for the people to move to safer areas and the local church’s community organizations are working to provide essential food and medicine to those in need.

The rains started on New Year’s Day and flooded Jakarta and nearby areas. According to government agencies, Jakarta is facing the biggest catastrophe in Southeast Asia since 1866. In Jakarta’s thirteen rivers, eight rivers were flooding the city. Cars lined up in mud, one by one, slammed into the road. As the rains continue, the country’s air force is backing the clouds with salt to control the rain.

Fifty-three people have already died in the floods and over two hundred thousand have been displaced. However, the charity Save the Children has warned that the spread of infectious diseases is not remote. Thirty million people live in the metropolitan city of Jakarta. Local governor Anis Basweden has warned of continued flooding during the rainy season, which lasts until March.
