Indian Christians observed August 10, 2017as Black Day in order to express their support to the socially deprived groups of Dalits in the country, who face discriminative state policy. Christians in New Delhi wore a black badge, sat with placards and performed a street play portraying the injustice faced by the Dalits and offered a prayer for the oppressed group. The protestors highlighted that the caste system is legally prohibited and they are social realities that even a change of religion does not erase.
As reported by ucanews.com, Father Z. Devasagaya Raj, secretary of the Indian Bishops’ office for Dalits, remarked that “Political parties believe Dalit Hindus are not joining Christianity for the fear of losing these benefits.” Further, he added, “They fear of the discrimination is ended there would be mass conversion to Christianity.”
As per the data, Christians form some 25million people in India but 70 percent of them are Dalit and tribal people but Christians and Muslim Dalits are denied some benefits on the grounds that their religions do not recognize the caste system.
