BENIN CITY – A Catholic priest has been kidnapped by armed men in southwestern Nigeria. Rev. of the Diocese of Euromie. Fr. Nicholas Obo was abducted by unknown men on Friday. We’re sure he’s alive. Diocese Chancellor Ozzy Odenor said efforts to release him were ongoing. Violence against Christians has been on the rise in Nigeria recently.
In January last year, four clergy students were abducted by an armed group that had come on a military expedition. One of them was killed by a mob. One out of the three released is in serious health condition. Aid to the Church in Need Executive President Thomas Hine Garden has said that the situation in Nigeria is dire and no one can control the armed forces. Nigeria ranks 12th among countries with the highest persecution of Christians worldwide.
