Kannur: The Archdiocese of Thalassery, which met Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, assured the government that the government would take prompt action to address the needs of farmers. Archbishop of Thalassery Mar George Naralakkattu, Mar Joseph Pamplani, Fr. Mathew Asaripparambil and Pastoral Council Secretary George Thayyil met the Chief Minister. He also held discussions with Forest Minister K Raju, Agriculture Minister VS Sunil Kumar and Revenue Minister E Chandrasekharan. The group also said that the state wildlife board has initiated action to give farmers the right to kill wild boars that damage the farmland.
The Archbishop pointed out that the declaration of a kilometer from the boundaries of the sanctuary would be harmful to farmers. However, the Forest Minister assured that the law would be implemented only in such a way that a single cent of farmers would not be affected by the land. The ministers said that Rs 240 crore would be earmarked for waiver of interest on agricultural loans. The Archdiocese has promised to cooperate with the government’s plan to involve farmers in crop insurance.
