Mumbai: CBCI President and Bombay Archbishop Cardinal Oswald Gracias has said that protests and alternatives and controversies against the amendment of the Citizenship Act could only be of concern to all citizens. “There is no harm in stepping back from the legislature’s will,” he said.
The protests, the alternatives and the controversies against the amendment of the Citizenship Act can be of concern to all citizens and may be harmful to the country. There is a risk of religious polarization. It will be very bad for the country. Religion should not be the criteria for citizenship in the country. Also, it is important to understand that the solution to disagreements is not violence. The Cardinal added that the government needed to negotiate with those who opposed the law and reached a consensus on the way forward in terms of justice, equity and fairness.
