Belgaum, Bengaluru: The Diocese of Sindhudurg released the first Devanagari script Bible on Sunday 13th October 2019. The event was presided over by Archbishop of Goa, Daman Filipe, Neri Ferrao and the bishop of Sindhudurg, Alwyn Baretto. The Devanagari Konkani Bible is a transliteration of the ‘Pavitra Pustak’ (Holy Bible). The book is compiled and published by the Diocesan Centre for Biblical Apostolate of the archdiocese of Goa and Daman.
The release of the Konkani Bible is expected to help around thousands of Konkani speaking Catholics in Maharashtra Goa and Karnataka.
During the publication release event, Bishop Baretto exclaimed that anyone who knows Konkani now has access to read and understand the Holy Bible. “Since the first complete Bible was published by the archdiocese of Goa, I was inspired to publish the same in Devanagari script for the benefit of scores Catholics who are comfortable with the script,” said Bishop Baretto.
Vicar General, Fr. Andrews D’mello the head of the Bible Commission of the diocese reveals that the transliteration process began in 2014 and culminated with great efforts, this month. The Sindhudurg Diocese has printed 8000 copies of the publication. The residence of Goa Maharashtra and parts of Karnataka are thronging to have their copy of the Devanagari Konkani Bible which is premierly available at Nava Swamy Kendra, Sawantwadi.
