Pope Francis, a model for millions of Catholics around the world today – A Pope from the new world has changed the Lord’s Prayer. From ‘Lead us not into Temptation’ to ‘Do not let us fall into temptation’, the journey was a long one. It took years of careful study and evaluation by experts for Pope Francis to approve this change in the famous prayer “Our Father”.
There were people who supported and welcomed the change, and also people who asked how the Pope could change the words of Jesus. In order to clear out the confusion among the faithful, Fr. Jonathan Morris, a commentator on religious matters in media, had explained in 2017 on Fox News while our Pope had put up a proposal to change the most important prayer of the Chruch that, “Nobody can change the words of Jesus. Jesus was a historical figure. He said the words of the ‘Our Father’, not in English but in Aramaic. And the best translation we have of the Our Father is in greek. And then that greek was translated into so many different languages. And those translations are very different. In English it says ‘lead us not into temptation’ but guess what, Jesus didn’t speak English!” He also said that the translation isn’t very good. God never makes us fall or never leads us into temptation but allows us to be tempted and that we have to make a choice.
The Pope told TV2000 in 2018 that the translation was not good. “Even the French changed the text to a translation that says: Do not let me fall into temptation, that I’m the one who falls. But it’s not him who throws me into temptation, to then see how I have fallen. No, a father doesn’t do this. A father helps you get up right away. The one who leads us into temptation is Satan”. With the change already brought about, the 3rd edition of Messale Romano will be printed and available for the parishioners to use soon.
