Pope Francis was appointed Rev. Fr. Shyamal Bose as the Coadjutor Bishop of Diocese Baruipur in the state West Bengal. The ecclesiastical provision was made public in Rome on 17th May 2019 at noon Local time corresponding to 15.30 hours of Indian standard time.Fr Shyamal Bose is currently serving as the Financial administrator and chancellor of the diocese. Born on March 24, 1961, in Gosaba in Baruipur diocese, Fr Bose joined St. John Mary Vianney’s Minor Seminary, Barasat and then studied at Regional Major Seminary Morning Star, Kolkata, and at St. Albert’s College, Ranchi.

He had his ordination as a priest for Baruipur diocese on May 5, 1991. He initiated his priestly ministry by serving as an assistant parish priest of St. Anthony’s Church, Keorapukar. He was the director of Palli Unnayan Samiti, the Diocesan Social Service Centre for eight years from 1998. He was the vicar general and chancellor of the diocese during 2000-2006. He had obtained a Licentiate in Biblical Theology from St. Peter’s Pontifical College, Bangalore (now Bengaluru) in the year 2010.

He has also served as the director of the Regional Social Centre, Association of Bengal Collaborators for Development in 2011. The diocese of Baruipur comprises of South 24 Parganas, a part of North 24 Parganas district and a part of Kolkata Metropolis. According to the CBCI website, The Population of Catholics in Baruipur is 62,847.
