Rome: Giacomo Della Torre, the eighth head of the Catholic Order of the Order of Malta, and a champion of mercy has died. He was seventy-five years old. The funeral was held in Rome yesterday. The news was officially released by Della Torre’s church. He has been undergoing cancer treatment for the past few months.
Born in Rome on December 9, 1944, Dalla Torre became Grand Master in May 2018 while serving as the Internal Grand Master of the Order of Malta. Della Torre graduated from Sapienza University in Rome with expertise in Christian archeology and art history. He taught classical Greek at the Pontifical University and served as the university’s librarian. He has published numerous articles and essays on medieval art history.
Dalla Torre joined the congregation in 1985 as Knight of Honor. The promise was made in 1993. Dalla Torre has participated in many foreign local pilgrimages of the Order of Malta. As a Grand Master, he has visited many countries. Della Torre met with Pope Francis on June 23, 2017, at the Vatican. Until a new Grand Master is chosen, Rui Goncalo or Dr. Valle Paixotto de Villas will be the boss.
