All India Catholic Union (AICU) , the oldest and largest catholic union has urged the newly elected President, Ram Chandra Kovind and the federal government to take serious and quick action against “hate mongers” who continue to create unnecessary conflicts between religions in the country. Several people in India have fallen victims to mob lynching related to religious intolerance and in the first 6 months of 2017, media reported 20 cases of violence related to cow protection, much more than any time in the past decade, of which 97 percent were Muslims who fell prey to such violence.
As reported by ucanindia.in, the union in a statement remarked that “The politics of the cow has targeted Muslims and other communities whose food habits and economy depended on the trade in bovines and its ramifications have not been fully understood, and AICU fears they will irretrievably damage the economic health of the farmers and the poor.”
“The union’s special gathering was convened in connection with it centenary in 2019, which is also the year of next general elections and this gathering aimed to discuss the existing social situation in the nation and register church’s response.” said AICU spokesperson John Dayal, as reported by ucanindia.in.
