His Eminence Cardinal Oswald Gracias of Bombay led an inter-religious Christmas gathering on 17th December in Mumbai which became a stage to discuss and find answers to the increasing conflicts in the country. The inter-religious prayer service was attended by Hindu, Islam, Sikh and Zoroastrian Buddhist, Jain and Christian leaders. The gathering was a reflection of Pope Francis’ call to religions to shun violence and terrorism at an inter-religious meeting in the Vatican.
As reported by ucanindia.in, Archdiocesan spokesperson Fr. Nigel Barrett emphasized that “In our time, the difference seem to be growing: there are conflicts between persons, religious ideologies and nations. While we long for peace, it seems that this hope is a mirage.” Religious leaders explained on how their respective traditions work hard to bring an awareness of the divine and how it enables them to respond to the fellow brothers and sisters of all faiths with love, dignity and respect.
The discussion also included the need for religious leaders leading a simple and courageous life becoming “doors of hope”, which helps the people to come out of pride and fear. The participants pledged to work for peace and His Lordship Cardinal Gracias expressed his gratitude towards the gathering.
