The Roman Catholic Church regards euthanasia as morally wrong. It has always taught the absolute and unchanging value of the commandment “You shall not kill”. The Church has always highlighted that nothing and no one can in any way permit the killing of an innocent human being. Kerala Catholic Bishops Conference (KCBC) expressed their concern over the judgement of the Supreme Court which allowed passive Euthanasia in the country.
As reported by economictimes.com, His Grace Archbishop Soosa Pakiam, KCBC President remarked that “The verdict was painful and would have disastrous consequences. The right of life is in the hands of God. It was not acceptable for anyone who believes in humanity to kill a person suffering from old age or sickness due to sympathy.” Further, His Grace added, “The order that stipulates guidelines to undergo passive euthanasia could be misused.”
Fr. Paul Thelakkatt, editor of the Church-run Satyadeepam magazine highlighted that this verdict is against the Indian Culture which underlines the right to life and reminded that India should desist from implementing euthanasia which now has become a fashion in some countries.
