San Jos, Costa Rica: A multitude walked downed the streets of San Jos, the Capital City of Costa Rica; as protest against the legalization of therapeutic abortion. The Pro-Life Movement was organized by Wake Up Costa Rica, Democracy in Action, and the Autonomous University of Central America demanding the abolition of the impending bill, which if approved, would result in legalizing abortion in the United States.

The event was held on the morning of 31st August, Saturday. The Movement intended to berate President Carlos Alvarado, from signing the “Technical Norm for Non-Punishable Abortion” which would regulate Article 121 of the Criminal Code for the performance of therapeutic abortion in public and private clinics nationwide.

Earlier in 2019, the Ministry announced that the government would legalize the bill, though an exact date wasn’t revealed. In lieu of the events, the Pro-Life groups elucidated that the ratification of the bill would destroy the sanctity of the Human Body and its Chastity. The legalization would call for an amendment on Article 21 of Political Constitution that says, ‘human life is inviolable’.

An opposition legislator of the New Republic Party, Carmen Chan stated, “life is inviolable and no one has the right to put an end to it and our duty is to promote laws and policies that contribute to the improvement of living conditions for Costa Ricans.” She also quote,”But no, the direction and the defenses that this government has chosen are quite different, that’s why we’re on the front lines today as a people, defending the most basic right of all—the right to life – which goes hand in hand with all those social guarantees that correspond to the state to offer”.

“The pro-life people of Costa Rica took to the streets to demonstrate that we’re against abortion on demand, and we’re not going to remain silent in face of the pretensions of abortion advocates, that we’re going to defend life from conception and do so because we are indeed a people of pure life,” said the social media page of Democracy in Action.

Days prior to the incident, the Bishops’ Conference of Costa Rica invited all the residents of San Jos and the citizens of Costa Rica as a whole, to actively participate in the Movement to protect life. They also thanked the secular organizations that “with great dedication and zeal for promoting the culture of life, have organized this event.”
