The newly-weds – Paula Podest Ruiz and Carlos Ciuffardi Elorriaga – are flight attendants for LATAM and met 8 years ago aboard a plane. Greg Burke,The Director of the Holy See Press Office, conveyed that the wedding Pope Francis performed aboard the papal plane bound for Iquique was totally legit and doctrinally OK. Greg Burke highlighted that this marriage in the clouds was the couples’ idea and not of Pope’s but reflected that Holy Father Pope Francis was happy to do it.
As reported by Vatican radio, Greg Burke remarked that “Doctrinally it’s OK, because to be married the actual ministers are the people themselves. You just need a witness. There are a couple other things, normally there are publications. And there were things that had to pass over, but it’s totally legit, and everyone’s happy!”
The official marriage certificate reads: “On 18th January 2018, aboard the papal plane from Santiago to Iquique, Mr Carlos Ciuffardi and Ms. Paula Podest Ruiz contracted marriage, in the presence of the witness, Ignacio Cueto.
