Genoa: The news about a Malayalee nun who risked her life to save an elderly clergyman is being debated in the Italian media. ‘The Daughters of Divine Providence of Don D’Aste’, a Malayali nun, Sister Divya, who is a member of the hermitage, has been in the news for her courageous intervention. The incident was reported on January 31.
In the midst of a liturgy in front of the Holy Mass at the church of San Francesco de Sestri Ponte in Genoa, Italy, the assailant was panting against the priest. Fr. Don was leading the worship. The removal of the attack was accompanied by a cry of “I am the devil, I am the devil”. Suddenly, Sr. Divya suddenly recovered her courage and ran to the attacker and blocked him.
Sister did not allow the clergyman to be attacked even with her own neck wound. Initially stagnant believers reached out to the Sister for help, but the attacker was unsuccessful. Within minutes, the police reached the spot and arrested the assailant. Assessing that the defendant has a mental problem, Mother Superior has announced that Sister Divya has not yet been released from the shock of the unexpected incident and is expected to be discharged from the hospital by next week.
Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco, bishop of the Archdiocese of Genoa, visited Sister Divya and congratulated him for his courageous intervention. The Mother Superior of the Daughters of Divine Providence of Don D’Aste said the prayer was offered to help her heal faster. Many Italian media have published stories praising Sister Divya’s bravery.
