Church leaders in Manila, Philippines, have appealed to Black Nazarene faithful in the country to celebrate their feast by observing cleanliness for the environment. The feast which falls on January 9, is expected to be celebrated by the faithful with a good consideration of the environment without making it polluted or unclean. Authorities have appealed to the pilgrims to renounce littering and embrace zero-waste during the celebration.
As reported by ucanews.com, Fr. Douglas Badong, Vicar of the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene in Quiapo district, remarked that “Let us consider our environment in our expression of faith.” Manila administrator Jojo Alcovendas highlighted that “The local government will deploy street sweepers at the tail end of the religious procession. We see to it that waste is collected right after the procession and enough personnel are in place to clean the streets.”
Up to 20 million people are expected to flock to the Philippine capital’s Quiapo district starting soon for the annual religious observance. Last, year, the city collected 342 tons of garbage during the festival week and at least 70 tons were collected after the 21- hour of precession.
