Mar Thomas Tharayil has been ordained as the Auxiliary Bishop of the Syro-Malabar archdiocese of Changanassery at a special ceremony at St. Mary’s Metropolitan Church on Sunday.

The ordination ceremony began at 2.15pm and was celebrated by Mar Joseph Perumthottam, the Archbishop of Changanassery. Mar Joseph Powathil, archbishop emeritus of Changanassery, and Mar Joseph Kallarangatt, Bishop of Pala, were the co-celebrants. Fr. Tom Puthenkalam, chancellor of the archdiocese, read out the message from Cardinal George Alancherry appointing Thomas Tharayil as the auxiliary bishop of Changanassery archdiocese. Hundreds of believers participated in the ceremony.

Mar Thomas Tharayil was born on February 2, 1972. He began his Theological studies at the Minor Seminary in Kurichy and later moved on to St Thomas Apostolic Seminary at Vadavathur. He was ordained priest on January 1, 2000. Being a Phd in Psychology, Mar Thomas Tharayil is a very eminent retreat preacher and a psychologist. He is also proficient in English, Italian, Spanish and German.
