As the Holy Father boards flight to his last destination of the Papal visit in the African subcontinent, Mauritians wait for his arrival to pay heed and be affirmed about their mission. According to reports from the Vatican, the Pope has started his journey from Madagascar to the island country in the Indian Ocean.
Incidentally, the visit coincides with the feast day of Blessed Jacques Désiré Laval, who is remembered as the ‘Apostle of Mauritius’. Bl. Laval (1803-1864) was a dedicated Catholic priest and a country doctor from France, who served in the interiors of Mauritius. He had profound knowledge in medicine which was manifested during the times when the country was struck by massive epidemics. He not only treated dwellers, but also educated them and aided in liberating the people from bonded labour and slavery. Therefore, the people of Mauritius venerate the blessed with reverence. Following the celebration of Holy Mass at Port Louis, Holy Father would visit the tomb of Bl. Laval.
As per schedule, the pope will carry out a meeting with the civic authorities and diplomatic corps at the State House post the public gathering; after which he will fly back to Antananarivo, Madagascar to spend the night before his travel back to Rome on Tuesday.
