Vatican City:  13 Cardinals from 12 countries were raised to the council of Cardinals on the ceremony that took place on the 5th of October, 2019 at the Vatican City. The Pontiff, Pope Francis adorned the new Cardinals with the holy vestments, the ring, and the authorization letter. Of the thirteen new Cardinals, one is a Jesuit priest while the others are Archbishops and bishops under the Papal council.

They belong to countries such as Guatemala, Morocco, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Indonesia, Luxembourg, Portugal, Cuba, Canada, England, Spain, Lithuania, and Italy. Among these, 10 of them are under the age of 80 and are eligible for voting rights to elect a new pope. 

The number of members in the council of Cardinals has now increased to 212, out of which 118 Cardinals are under the age limitations to the right to vote in case of an election.

  4. Archbishop Fridolin Besungu, O.F.M. CAP (Democratic Republic of the Congo), archbishop of Kinshasa
  5. Archbishop Ignatius Suharyo Hardjoatmodjo, (Indonesia), archbishop of Jakarta
  6. Archbishop Jean-Claude Hollerich, S.J. (Luxembourg), archbishop of Luxembourg
  7. José Tolentino Calaça de Mendonça (Portugal), archbishop, chief archivist and librarian of the Holy Roman church
  8. Archbishop Juan de la Caridad García Rodríguez (Cuba), archbishop of San Cristòbal de Havana
  9. Archbishop Matteo Zuppi, (Italy), archbishop of Bologna
  10. Michael Czerny, S.J. (Czechoslovakia and Canada), undersecretary for the section of migrants in the Dicastery for the Service for Integral Human Development
