The newly appointed Papal Nuncio to the Philippines, His Excellency Archbishop Gabriele Giordano Caccia, arrived in Manila to accept and fulfill his responsibility faithfully. Holy Father Pope Francis appointed him as the Apostolic Nuncio or Vatican ambassador to the Philippines on September 12, 2017. The 59-year old diplomat takes over the position from His Grace Archbishop Pinto whom His Holiness Pope Francis transferred to Croatia on July 1, 2017.
His Grace Archbishop Caccia was ordained a priest on June 11, 1983 and he served as Assessor for General Affairs of the Vatican Secretariat of State. Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI appointed him as Apostolic Nuncio to Lebanon in 2009 and was consecrated bishop in 2009.
The Philippines is home to Asia’s largest Catholic population, with some 81% of its over 100 million population professing Roman Catholicism.
