Nirmala Sadan, a special school in Muvattaupuzha in Ernakulum district, Kerala, is facing troubles and severe hardships to run the school that trains 230 special athletes children who are guided by 56 staffs of the school, since last two years, due to the negligence of the ruling government. Till the financial year 2014-15, the school received funding of 25lakhs but in 2014-15, only 14 lakh was provided and then for the next two years till now, there is no proper information regarding the funds and the government has completely stopped providing funds to Nirmala Sadan.
Remya Raj, a teacher from Nirmala Sadan stressed that “My students are national champions and they have won several medals at the Special Olympics but their future is in danger because our school can be forced to shut down and our school is a home to children with different intellectual abilities.” Further, she added, “Teachers of the school have volunteered to accept partial salaries and sometimes even no salaries but they continue to work because this involves the lives of 230 children with intellectual abilities.”
Nirmala Sadan students have proved themselves victorious at various athletes’ games, even in Special Olympics. There is no proper response from the government on why the funds have been stopped and the authorities have no clear ideas about the official files of Nirmala Sadan and thus the process is getting delayed for no specific reason and this keeps the lives of the children and the staffs of Nirmala Sadan, on hold. The local Congregation of Franciscan Clarist sisters in the Diocese of Kothamangalam has stepped in to support the school since the government had stopped funding.
Unfortunately, Nirmala Sadan is at its verge of shutting down such a blessed organization that trains Special Athletes, due to no funds and help from the government. Now, it becomes our moral duty and a great responsibility to stand united for the Special Athletes children in Nirmala Sadan.
