On 3rd July 2017, at the inauguration of the Syro-Malabar Church day, at Mount St.Thomas in Kakkanad, Kochi, Cardinal Mar George Alencherry, the current Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church conveyed in his speech , to ensure that, nurses in private hospitals get fair salaries as compared to those in the government sector.
As the strike for better wages among the nurses in Kerala is exasperating, Mar George Alencherry reminded that the nurses provides valuable services to the society and thus should be a part of social justice. As reported by the Malayala Manorama, His Beatitude said that “There was no need to promote charitable works at Catholic hospitals without paying fair wages to nurses.” Mar George Alencherry assured that he was hopeful that the hospitals managed by the Catholic denominations are paying fair wages to the nurses but asked to recheck this.
As stated in the Matters India, His Beatitude Mar George Alencherry concluded by remarking that “All Catholic managements have agreed to follow the recommendation by a special committee assigned by the Supreme Court to make sure that nurses at privately owned hospitals get fair salaries at par with those in the government sector” and asked the state government of Kerala to take quick and errorless action for the justice of nurses in the state.
