KARACHI: A 14-year-old Christian girl in Karachi, Pakistan, has been kidnapped, bound, and forced to marry and convert to Islam. Tabass, a lawyer for Huma Younus, a victim of forced conversion, has also come forward to appeal to the global Christian community to help bring Yusuf back to her grieving parents.

“This is what happened to Huma. Yusuf, also a Christian believer, says that tomorrow can happen to any other girl. In October last year, Huma was kidnapped by an Islamist religious figure, Abdul Jabbar. Yousaf appealed to the global community, especially the world leaders, Pope Francis, the Catholic Church and human rights organizations in the presence of various human rights organizations in Karachi yesterday to present the case to the High Court and help them in the legal battle.

The lawyer said Huma’s parents were helpless and received several threatening messages after she filed a complaint with the police. They also revealed that Huma’s parents had received threats of contempt if they proceeded with legal proceedings. She also pointed out the legal thread that Huma could not see Huma legally because she is now a minor and now with her husband. Youssef says Huma’s condition is heartbreaking and that as long as she remains with the kidnappers, she will have to endure physical and psychological abuse.

A bill to criminalize child marriage has been introduced in Pakistan’s parliament but has not been approved. Religious minorities, including Christians and Hindus, find it difficult to protect their girls from the perpetrators of conversion. They want the abduction of a young girl against their own will. Although the constitution says that the law is equal to everyone, Yousaf asks how the law is different when it comes to religious minorities.
