Catholic dioceses in Philippine have asked the government in the country to not support mining in the Leyte Gulf, a small Island in the Philippines. Around 70 priests along with Bishop Crispin Vasquez of Borongan protested against the mining activity which causes the destruction of the eco system and communal feuds including unwanted tensions, through a letter written to Roy Cimatu, Philippine Environment Secretary.
As reported by ucanews.com, Yolanda Esguerra, national coordinator of Philippine- Misereor Partnership observed that “We must continue to engage our new environment Secretary, who compared to the previous one, has a different stance on the environmental protection.” The church leaders stressed that “Mining is destroying the ecosystem and the water supply on the Island, mainly rain has declined.”, as stated by ucanews.com.
Mining on the Island had been suspended since 2002due to complaints filed by the church leaders but transportation of minerals stockpiles continued.
