His Holiness Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of His Grace Most Rev. Bernard Blasius Moras from the pastoral care of the Archdiocese of Bangalore and has appointed H. E. Msgr. Peter Machado, until now Bishop of Belgaum, as the new Archbishop of Bangalore. His Grace Most Rev. Bernard Moras will remain as Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese until the day of the canonical taking possession of the new Archbishop.
His Excellency Archbishop-elect Peter Machado did his theological studies in Papal Seminary, Pune, and was ordained a priest on 8 December, 1978, for the Diocese of Karwar that was separated from the Belgaum diocese and made into a new diocese in 1976. He was appointed Bishop of Belgaum on 2 February 2006 and was ordained bishop on 30 March, 2006.
Presently, he is the member of the Karnataka Region Catholic Bishops’ Council (KRCBC), and member of the Board of Administration of St. Peter’s Pontifical Seminary and Institute, Bengaluru, and member of All Karnataka United Christian Forum for Human Right (AKUCFHR). He is also the Chairman of the Karnataka Regional Bishops’ Council’s Commission for Family and Laity and also the Vice-President of the Catholic Council of Karnataka (CCK). He also had the additional responsibility of being the Secretary of the Commission for Women.
