Vatican City: Pope Francis named 21 new cardinals on Sunday, May 29. The cardinals will be appointed at a Consistory on Saturday, August 27, thereby increasing the College of Cardinals from 208 to 229.
After the Regina Coeli on Sunday, the Pope said, “On Saturday, 27 August, I will hold a Consistory for the creation of new Cardinals. Let us pray that they will help me in my mission as Bishop of Rome for the good of all God’s people.” Archbishop Anthony Poola of Hyderabad and Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferraro of Goa and Daman will be the newly elected cardinals from India.
Eight of the newly named cardinals are from Europe, six from Asia, two from Africa, one from North America, and four from Central and Latin America. Out of the 229 cardinals in the College of Cardinals, only 131 will be eligible to vote in a conclave.
