Holy Father Pope Francis had sent a message expressing his heartfelt condolences on the death of His Lordship Cardinal Dionigi Tettamanzi, Archbishop Emeritus of Milan, who passed away at the age of 83, on 5th August, 2017. His Eminence Cardinal Tettamanzi was a moral theologian and a leading voice in the Italian Church and at one point was even considered a likely candidate for the papacy. His Lordship Tettamanzi was given the title “Monsignor” in 1985 and in 1987; he was chosen to serve the Pontifical Lombard Seminary. His Eminence was named Archbishop of Milan in July 2002.

As reported by Catholic News Agency, His Holiness remarked in his letter that “In learning of the news of the passing of the dear Cardinal Dionigi Tettamanzi, I wish to express my condolences to his family and members of that diocesan community, which lists him among her most illustrious sons and most lovable and beloved pastors.”

While at the end of the telegram, Holy Father Pope Francis reflected that “God would welcome this faithful servant, whom he loved so greatly, in joy and eternal peace.” as reported by Catholic News Agency.
