His Holiness Pope Francis expressed his nearness to the population of the Island of Sulawesi, in Indonesia. These thoughts followed the recitation of the Angelus with thousands of the faithful gathered in St Peter’s Square on Sunday.
As reported by Vatican news, Holy Father Pope Francis remarked that “I pray for the deceased – which are unfortunately numerous – for the wounded, and for those who have lost their homes and employment. May the Lord console them and sustain the efforts of those who are taking part in the relief efforts.”
The death toll from Friday’s earthquake and tsunami in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia climbed to 1,203 as of now. Powerful and shallow under-earthquakes with magnitudes of 6.0, 7.4 and 6.1 devastated the province on 28th September, with the hardest-hit area being Palu and the Donggala district. A three-metre high tsunami devastated coastal areas near Talisa beach in Palu city and Donggala district 30 minutes after the 7.5 earthquake on Friday.
