Holy Father Pope Francis spoke via satellite link with the crew of International Space Station and the video link-up lasted about 20-minutes, with the Holy Father speaking to the astronauts from the “Auletta” of the Paul VI Hall, in the presence of the President of the Italian Space Agency, Roberto Battiston and the Director of Earth Observation Programmes of the European Space Agency (ESA), Josef Aschbacher.
As reported by theguardian.com, Holy Father Pope Francis remarked that “The Earth is a fragile thing that could even destroy itself and you have an opportunity to see the planet from the eyes of God.” Further, His Holiness added, “Astronomy makes us think about the universe’s boundless horizons and prompts questions such as “where do we come from, where are we going?””
The video call with six astronauts included life’s biggest questions like their opinion on love, their sources of joy and how life without gravity changed their view of the world. The US astronaut and mission commander Randy Bresnik told the Pope that they saw a world without borders or conflicts from their point of view above the Earth.
