The priest, who was stabbed in the neck during the Holy Mass at the cathedral of Mexico City, died in hospital. Fr. Jose Miguel Machorro, 55, was attacked with a knife on May 15, 2017, by the assailant, Juan Rene Silva Martinez, a 32year old Mexican citizen, who is determined to have a psychotic disorder as per the expert reports. Juan tried to slit the throat of the priest, instead ended up injuring him on the right side of the neck that caused Fr. Machorro to be in the Intensive Care Unit until late June.
As reported by Catholic News Agency, His Lordship Cardinal Norberto Rivera Carrera of Mexico, remarked that “May the God of life already have him in his presence and May Our Lady of Guadalupe console and strengthen all the faithful who have suffered along with him this lamentable deed, especially his relatives, who suffer today this irremediable loss which most deeply pains us.”
Fr. Machorro was declared brain dead on August 2, 2017 and died shortly after noon the following day. Increasing violence against the priests in the country has become a great concern for the growing Church.
