In lieu of protests against Argentine President Alberto Fernandez’s move to legalize abortion, Argentine bishops have responded to the president’s move to introduce a bill to legalize feticide in Congress. On Sunday, March 8, the International Women’s Day, the Mass of Our Lady of Luzon, the largest Marian church in the country, was celebrated in the Basilica with the Proliferation of the Holy Mass.
The Prolific Mass was organized by the Argentine Bishop with the theme “Yes to Women, Yes to Life”. Ozzy Quintana, president of the Argentine bishop’s committee and bishop of San Isidro, played a key role. The special sacrifice was held in protest of last week’s announcement that Congress would introduce a bill that would legalize abortion. In his speech, the bishop said in a speech in the Holy Qurbana that millions of Argentinians, believers and unbelievers know that the embryo has life from conception and that there is another life in the womb besides the mother.
Calling them liars and hypocrites is in no way justified. In fact, they value the rights of every woman and child to be born. The bishop ended his speech by hoping that through this liturgy, we can eliminate the culture that conceals and silences whatever the crime is.
The Argentine Deputy Chamber in 2018 passed a bill that would legalize abortions for up to 14 weeks, but was rejected by the Senate. Abortion is currently only valid in Argentina in cases of threats to the life or health of the mother and rape.
