Sao Paulo: Brazil’s Supreme Court today dismissed an appeal not to make abortion a criminal offense for women infected with the Zika virus. The verdict is to cheer on pro-life activists. In 2016, the National Public Safety Council (ANADEP) appealed that women should be treated as an essential component of the Zika virus. Such a move was not foreseen by the Brazilian criminal law. The Catholic Church and the pro-life organizations have come out in strong opposition to the scrutiny.
When the proceedings resumed on April 24, the Brazilian bishop’s committee called on the public to express their protest through social media. In addition, an article published on the website of bishop Mon. Fernando Arayaas Rafan said that the constitution guarantees the integrity of human life. Yesterday, six of the Tribune’s 11 verdicts appealed against the decision.
