Ranchi: In connection with the Bhima Koregaon case, a Jesuit priest, Fr. Stan Swamy was arrested on 9th October. Protests erupted over the arrest of Fr. Stan Swamy. The People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), a human rights group, said the arrest was shocking. The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) has demanded the immediate release of Fr. Stan Swamy. The priest, who is fully cooperating with the investigation, has already stated his innocence. The CBCI said the priest was arrested without considering his circumstances, age and physical difficulties.

The Ranchi diocese responded that the arrest of Fr. Stan Swamy was causing unrest and pain. The diocese questioned the circumstances under which an elderly man was arrested in the middle of the night. When an elderly person is taken into custody and imprisoned, his health should also be taken into consideration. He had told the arresting officers that he was ill and was willing to go to the office during the day and cooperate with the investigation. The Ranchi diocese said in a press release that the NIA’s move was reprehensible in this situation.

It was midnight on Thursday from the Bagaicha campus in Ranchi, Fr. Stan Swamy was  arrested by NIA team. He was produced in court in Mumbai and remanded in judicial custody till October 23. The campaign for the release of the priest is also gaining strength on social media.
