The information about these saints comes from information prepared by the Armenian Duke and the man Elias, who were in the army of King Zapor. In the eighth year of his reign, King Sapporo began a bloody persecution against Christians. They destroyed many churches and monasteries. As soon as the brothers, Jonas and Barachius, who lived in the city of Beth-asa, learned of the news that the Christians had been sentenced to death, they went to serve and encourage them. But before they arrived, the martyr’s dome was heated to nine.
Meanwhile, Jonas and Barachiasius were captured. The judge asked the saints to obey the Persian king and to worship the sun, moon, fire, and water. The saints replied, “True worship is to worship our heavenly Father, the King of heaven and earth.” Angered by this, they placed Barachiasius in a narrow jar and persuaded Jonas to sacrifice the sun, the moon, the fire, and the water. They refused to comply and began to beat him with sticks and sticks.
In spite of the brutal persecution, the Holy One continued to pray and say, “I thank You, O God of our father Abraham.” I implore you to enable me to become an acceptable sacrifice for you. I reject the sun, the moon, fire, and water. I believe in the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The judge then bound the saint’s feet with a rope and threw them into a pool of cold water.
After dinner, the judge summoned Barachiusius and lied that his brother Jonas had sacrificed to their gods. Upon hearing this, the saint said it was impossible, and spoke loudly and enthusiastically about the power of the Lord God. Then they began to viciously persecute the saint with burning iron plates and hammers. Angered by these words, the rulers poured molten lead on the saint’s nostrils and eyes, then carried him to the prison and tied him up in solitary confinement.
He then brought in St. Jonas, who was stationed in the pool. Asked by the administration of the mockery of last night’s torture, the saint said, “I cannot recall such an enjoyable night in my life.” They lied to the saint that Barachiasius had abandoned his faith. The saint replied, “I know he has abandoned Satan and his angels long ago.” Then the Holy One spoke to them without fear about Jesus and the decay of earthly life.
The judges cut off the toe and toe of the saint. The skin was then extracted from the skull of the saint, and afterward, his tongue was removed and thrown into boiling water. But when the boiling water could not do anything for the servant of the true God, he compelled the saint to lie down among the wooden planks, chop and slay the saint’s body with an iron sword, and set guards to keep the remains of other Christians.
Next was the turn of St. Barachiusius. He asked the saint to renounce his faith in order to save his body. The Sovereign replied, “The One who created it will restore it to Himself and He will judge you and your King.” Realizing that they could not bring the saint to death, they struck the saint with sharp spines. The saint and martyr, like his brother, heated up after experiencing many cruel tortures.
These brave saints received the most brutal persecution and became the heirs of the heavenly home. As soon as they heard the news of the death of these saints, Abtussiatus confiscated their dead body. According to the Roman Martyrdom, the martyrdom day of these saints is March 29th.
