Kerala Catholic Community celebrates Madhya Virudh or No Alcohol day on the 15th of March 2017. In order to eradicate alcoholism and put forth a firm message across, about the ill effects of alcohol on individuals as well as the society, this initiative has come forward.

Alcohol has become one of the most commonly used and being thoroughly misused across all generations because it has been a socially accepted phenomenon. The effects of alcoholism on families can be devastating, manifested differently on each family member.

Being known as “God’s own country”, Kerala is a state which stands out as the most literate, truly remarkable socially, economically and culturally. The morality of this state is fading away due to alcohol abuse. The population most prone to improper alcohol abuse or usage of drugs are the youth. It can act as a long term educational crisis which may spoil their future and the generations to follow. It would be dishonourable and depressing to see the future of our country, the youth in such circumstances. Usage of alcohol even once can make the person an addict in the near future.

The Madhya Virudh Samiti of the Kerala Catholic Bishop’s Council (KCBC), who had also supported the liquor ban in Kerala, is making a lot of efforts to scale down the consumption of liquor in the state. It is necessary to take a pledge for ourselves that every gathering we are a part of must not necessarily have the availability of alcohol. Therefore, it is necessary that we collectively strive to beat this growing alcoholism in the state and persevere to curtail this emerging problem before it worsens.

The Madhya Virudh day is to be observed on the third Sunday of the Lenten season, a time of reflection of our consciousness and striving to nurture our spiritual health. The offertory of that Sunday will be given to the diocese, and used by the KCBC for fostering their mission of putting an end to alcoholism.
