Unknown miscreants desecrated and vandalized a statue of Don Bosco in front of the Bishop’s House in Assam’s Tezpur, on 29th September, 2018. The faithful looks at this issue with mounting concern noting that such an incident has happened in Tezpur, which is considered to the cultural capital of Assam. The statue depicted the founder of Salesian congregations with two boys, but the miscreants broke the heads of the boys and made a gaping hole in the saint’s torso.

As reported by The Hindu, The Assam Christian Forum, expressing shock over the desecration, hoped the police would book the culprits soon to restore the faith and security of the Christian community. Allen Brooks, the forum’s spokesperson said that “It’s unfortunate that such an incident happened in Tezpur, which is Assam’s cultural capital.”

The forum recalled a similar incident in Guwahati a couple of years ago. Opposition from certain groups forced the Guwahati Catholic Province to shift the statue of Don Bosco from a public place to inside the Provincial House.
