NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court today said it would not interfere in the ordinance enacted by the state government on cremation of Christian cemeteries. There will be no interference in the disposal of the bodies. It is not a matter of the court as to who the clergy minister is. The bench, headed by Justice Arun Mishra, said, “No one should be disrespectful to the bodies.” The Supreme Court is considering a petition filed in the Orthodox Jacobite Church case.
The court said it would not interfere with the other issues by declaring that the 2017 order relating to ecclesiastical disputes is being considered for non-compliance. During the hearing, the court noted the disputes over the burial of bodies and the government’s ordinance. However, a two-judge bench pointed out that such matters are out of the question. Justice Arun Mishra has warned that the court will ignore the Orthodox Church’s plea to withdraw further.
